The images in this section I have chosen from my favourite image edits that I have done.
1.
Fitness for Purpose
I have chosen this image because it is one of my favourite ones that I have edited. I like this edit because I think that the different sized lipsticks make the frame interesting and I enjoyed editing the backgrounds from them. I also think that where Felicity is placed in the frame was easy to add more elements to the frame and I think that the lipstick is highlighted well and has a good focus on the frame.
2.
Fitness for Purpose
I chose this image as one of the edits that are my favourite. I chose this image because I enjoyed putting the cover together and editing in the different elements. I like the way that sam is slightly in the frame, I did this because I wanted Felicity to be the main focus of the frame, but I wanted Sam to be an element in the frame because I think that he has added something to it because it gives the lipstick a look of glamour.

Fitness for Purpose
I have chosen this edit as one of my 5 favourite edits that I have done from my photo shoot using ADOBE Photoshop. I have chosen this edited image because I think I like the photo that I have edited in from my photo shoot. I also think that the way the lipstick tips have been placed and spread out are interesting and make advertise the image well.
4.
I like the photo I have edited for this image and I think that the lipstick tips are nicely presented. I also like that fact that this image of Felicity shows her using the lipstick and how she is holding it and I also think that the redness of the lipstick stands out in this image against the white background and with the black dress. I like the slogan I have used in this and the way that Felicity's name is demonstrated in the frame.
5.
I have edited this cover is a slightly different way to which I have from the other ones. I have edited out the background that the image originally used and replaced it with a white background which I think highlights Felicity's lipstick and her dress. I like about the image because it clearly shows Felicity using the lipstick which is a good advertisement for M.A.C lipstick. I like the lipstick print that has been used because I think that it gives the cover a bright, vibrant feel and these are used a lot in magazine covers. I have placed the lipstick tips in this position because it looks as though Felicity it looks at the tips with a feel that Felicity loves the lipstick.
6.
For this edit, I decided to change the vibrance and saturation effect on the layer showing Felicity and Sam. I did this because I thought that by then not changing the saturation and vibrance of the lipstick tips, they would be highlighted more in the edit. This makes for good advertising of the lipstick because they are put in the focus as they are the main product.
7.
This edit is slightly different to the others that I have done. This edit is slightly more simple than the other edits, but I felt that it didn't need much added to it, more work on the colour and vibrance of the image, with added text.
This video montage below is a presentation of my edited images.
For this task we had to edit the images that we had taken in our photo shoot in ADOBE Photoshop. I used different effects for each image and screen-shotted the steps I took during the process of editing for each image. These are the images that I have chosen out of all of the images I took during my shoot to edit and analyse.
1. a) Skills in composition The rule of thirds - This image doesn't break the rule of thirds as the main focus of the frame isn't in the centre of it. The models in the image are the only focus in the image and they are taking up the whole width of the frame. This puts them as the main focus in the photo. Balancing elements - This image is quite balanced as it goes with the rule of thirds, there is nothing in the middle dominating the whole frame, the two models Sam and Felicity are equally balanced in the frame. However, the top third of the frame is quite bare and has nothing really in it, this doe make the frame unbalanced, but it does put the main focus on Sam and Felicity which is what I wanted. Background - The background of this image is blurred and is shown in white. Whereas the models are in focus and are showing dark colours, contrasting with the white background high-lighting them in the frame. Lighting - High-key lighting was use for this image as you can see the models' faces clearly and everything is outlined and clear. I used high-key lighting because I didn't want the photos from my shoot to seem dark or sinister, I wanted to produce a sense of glamour in these images and I think if I used low-key lighting, it would ruin the theme I was trying to portray.
b) Skills in controlling image exposure, focus and using lenses chosen from: EF85mm f/1.8 USM
c) Studio Lighting - I used a range of lights for our shoot and placed them all around the white background setting and models. There were a few lights that we set up that weren't working with where the models were standing in the shoot, so I turned them off because they created a shadow.
2. a) The rule of thirds - This image goes with the rule of thirds because the main focus of the image isn't in the middle of the frame, Sam and Felicity are more towards the right side of the image. Balancing elements - Because this image follows the rule of thirds, it make the image unbalanced. Sam and Felicity are standing more towards the right side of the frame, whereas the left third of the image hasn't got any elements in it apart from the white background. This make the image quite different. Lighting - I used high-key lighting for this image, however there is a slight shadow on Felicity's face from Sam. To prevent this, I should have made sure that Felicity was standing further forward or the lighting we used were placed in different positions.
b) Skills in controlling image exposure, focus and using lenses chosen from: EF85mm f/1.8 USM
c) Studio Lighting - I used the same lighting throughout the whole shoot, however we did reposition individual lights for different images, because some of the lights were creating a shadow on the Sam and Felicity.
3. a) Skills of Composition Rule of thirds - The rule of thirds does apply in this image, the models are not directly in the middle of the frame. They take up most of the frame which makes quite a balanced photo. Balancing elements - The frame consists of mostly Sam and Felicity, this makes the image balanced because they are both on either side of the frame and both have the same presence in the photo. Leading lines - Felicity's arm is a leading lines in this image. As you look at the image, her arm leads you to her hand touching Sam's arm. This creates a a soft element to the image. Lighting - I used high-key lighting throughout the whole photo shoot. I think the lighting in this image works well because there is a slight shadow of Sam's face which puts the main focus on Felicity, she has no shadow on her face and her lips are well shown in the image and are highlighted well in contrast with the white background.
Also as you can see most of Felicity's face that puts her as the main focus of the frame, whereas you can only see half of Sam's face, so he doesn't have as bigger presence as Felicity does in this image.
b) Skills in controlling image, exposure, focus and using lenses chosen from: EF85mm f/1.8 USM
4) a) Skills of Composition: Rule of thirds:This image goes with the rule of thirds. I have said this because the main focus of the image, Felicity, isn't centred in the middle of the frame. This adds balance and interest to the frame. Felicity is placed just slightly to the right of the frame. The left side of the frame hasn't really got anything in it, I think this creates more focus of Felicity which will highlight her and her outfit more and also the lipstick, the product I am aiming to advertise. Balancing elements:Because Felicity is not centred in the middle of the frame, a balance to the image would be expected. However, because there is nothing else other than Felicity shown in the frame, it makes for quite a unbalanced image because she is the only element of the frame that is interesting and because she is place on the right hand side of the frame, the left side hasn't got any elements to it, which makes for an unbalanced image. But because of this more focus is put on Felicity in the frame which is what I wanted so I am happy with this image. Symmetry and patterns:This image isn't very symmetrical because there is only one element of the frame and she is centred on the right side. This breaks the symmetry/pattern of the frame and introduces tensions and a focal point to the scene.
b) Skills in controlling image, exposure, focus and using lenses chosen from: EF85mm f/1.8 USM
c)
Aperture: f/2.2
ISO speed: 200
Shutter speed: 1/125
5) a) Skills in composition: Rule of thirds: This image does not break the rule of thirds. Felicity is based on the right side of the frame so the main focus of the image is not centred in the middle of the frame, which would break the rule of thirds. Not breaking the rule of thirds is supposed to create balance and interest to an image. Balancing elements: However, I feel that because I am sticking to the rule of thirds for this image it is creating a rather unbalanced image because the main focus of the frame, Felicity, is on the right side of it, but I do think that it makes the image interesting because it isn't and ordinary image where the main focus of the frame is centred in the middle, Felicity is placed on the right side of the image which I think puts the main focus on her and on the lipstick which is what I was trying to achieve from these images from my photo shoot. Because balancing elements of an image normally includes another object/subject in the frame of lesser importance just to fill the frame, however I don't feel that this image needs that because the main focus is Felicity which is what I was aiming for because I would like the lipstick to be highlighted in my images. Background: The background for this image I used a white background sheet. I used a white background because I thought that it would highlight Felicity more with the lipstick on because the red and black would stand out against the white. However, during the editing process I feel that I should edit in a new white background that it more consistent because the background in this image is quite lumpy and you can see that I have used a sheet so my shoot.
b) Skills in controlling image, exposure, focus and using lenses chosen from: EF85mm f/1.8 USM
c)
Aperture: f/8
ISO speed: 640
Shutter speed:1/60
This video demonstrates a montage of images of our team during the production process for this shoot.
For this task we used the 'Three-point lighting' method, where three separate lights are are placed in three separate positions, to control the shadowing and shading of light that is on the subject e.g. person, that is being photographed.
Setting up 3-point-lighting
In class we used three-point-lighting in groups of four. One person sat on a chair and we had to set up the three lights we were going to use to create the three-point-lighting effect. This worked well and the images we took, we tried to reduce the amount of shadow that was on the subjects face as much as possible. We had to move around the lights a few times in order to remove the shadowing on the subjects face.
I think that this is one of the strong images that we took in our class task because there is very little shadowing on the subjects face which is what we aimed to do. The subjects figure is outlined well and he doesn't fade into the background of the image. The shutter speed was at 1/200 sec, which means that the setting didn't allow much light in. The ISO setting provided a low sensitivity to light and gave a higher quality image. The image is very clear, in focus and well lit up, I think that the position of the lights were good with the aperture, shutter speed settings and ISO speed. They all balanced each other out and produced a well balanced, lit up clear image.
This image has the same shutter speed as the one above, but a slightly higher aperture. This aperture setting allowed more light in which balanced out with the shutter speed not letting much light in. The subjects body is very light and clear, his face is well lit up with no shadowing, so we succeeded with this photo because we aimed not to allow shadowing in the face. I think that these two images above were one of the better images that we took in our task.
For this image, we used slightly different ISO speed and aperture value settings. This cause the photo to be slightly over-exposed which is not what we wanted for these images, so this was not a completely successful image because the it is just slightly to bright. This is because the aperture setting was at a low value so it let a lot of light in, f/2.0 which also allows for a blurred background which is what has happened in this image. The ISO speed setting was at 320 which provided a low sensitivity to light. The shutter speed setting didn't allow for much light to be in. I think that one of the 3 lights was too close to the subject for this image. We should've move it slightly further away and put a shade on it, so it wouldn't of been so harsh. I think that this was one of the weaker images that we took in our task.
Low key/Chiaroscuro lighting
Chiaroscuro lighting is the use of strong contrasts between light and dark, usually to create a bold presence in an image. It is normally use din modelling to create volume of figures and objects.
George Hurrell
George Hurrell's work was based on photographing glamour shots of celebrities throughout the 1930s and 1940s. He used low key, black and white lighting for photograph glamour shots because he thought that is showed people in the most glamorous way possible.
Richard Avedon
Richard Avedon was an American fashion and portrait photographer. His style of photography was considered to be different because instead of photographing models standing still, he photographed them in motion, smiling or laughing and many times outdoors. But later on in his career, he grew tired of photographing outside, so he set up his own studio, using strobe lighting.
Youseph Karsh
Youseph Karsh was an Armenian-Canadian portrait photographer. From the 1920s to the 1940s, Karsh experimented with artificial light for the first time. His career hit off after his portrait of Winston Churchill with artificial lighting, known for capturing a clear shot of the people he photographed.
